Recommended by Emily Mockler, Sales Assistant, House of Anansi and Groundwood Books

“My holiday staff pick is a Groundwood book titled The Composition by Antonio Skármeta illustrated by Alfonso Ruano. The Composition is about a young boy in an unnamed country, living within a military dictatorship. As Pedro, the protagonist, becomes increasingly aware of his surroundings he must confront many complicated issues. Morality, personal responsibility, and freedom are strong themes throughout and Pedro must ultimately choose which side he is on. Written in accessible language, with complementary full colour illustrations throughout, this story speaks to all ages.”
