A letter from Groundwood Books Co-Publisher Patsy Aldana to Toronto City Council

The Toronto Public Library board has been mandated by Mayor Rob Ford’s administrator to cut a further 10% from the library budget, after already reducing the budget by $10 million. The Toronto Star reports that the library will have to cut hours to achieve the $7 million in savings needed.

Groundwood Books Co-Publisher Patsy Aldana is also Co-Chair of the National Reading Campaign (alongside Rick Wilks). Patsy and Rick have written a passionate letter to Toronto City Council asking that the Council reconsider the budget cuts:

“Torontonians have an obligation to give every child living in this city the chance to have a successful life by becoming life-long readers. Our democracy and sense of fairness demand it.” — Patsy Aldana and Rick Wilks (read the full letter)

Please help us spread the word by sharing this blog post and letter with your friends and family and local City Councillor.

  1. I am a committee member for the Diamond State Reading Association’s Delaware Diamonds Award, our state’s Children’s Choices program. I recently read a review of No Ordinary Day by Deborah Ellis and would like to have a review copy sent so that our committee can consider it for possible inclusion in our 2011-2012 list. The books may be sent to: Karen Gordon, Brandywood Elem., 2523 Berwyn Rd., Wilmington, DE 19810.

Feel free to send any other books you’d like us to consider. Books must be good quality literature of any genre which are published during 2010, 2011, or 2012. for grades K-5. (We are especially in need of books to review for our grade 3-5 category.) Please let me know the proper way to request books in the future.

    Thank you,
